Install less. Orchestrate more.
The honest guide to installing Marshell, opening your first workspace, and understanding what is shipped today versus what is still being built.
What Marshell is
Marshell is an open-source desktop workspace for developers who work across projects, terminals, and AI coding tools. Its goal is to replace scattered terminal windows and browser tabs with one project-scoped command center.
Version 1 establishes the workspace and terminal foundation. Agent execution, kanban dispatch, Prompt Forge, and coordinated swarms are at different stages of development; their status is documented below instead of being presented as finished.
Note
Install Marshell
Use the one-line installer for the fastest setup. It detects your platform, resolves the latest Marshell release, installs the application, and registers the marshell command.
Linux and macOS
v1Works on Linux and macOS. It also supports WSL, Git Bash, MSYS, and Cygwin when their required Unix tools are available.
curl -fsSL https://marshell.bond/install.sh | bashWindows PowerShell
v1Runs the native Windows installer through PowerShell 5.1 or newer and registers Marshell for the current user.
powershell -c "irm https://marshell.bond/install.ps1 | iex"Windows Command Prompt
v1Downloads the Windows command launcher, which performs a preflight check and hands installation to PowerShell.
curl -fsSL https://marshell.bond/install.cmd -o install.cmd && install.cmdTip
What the installer does
1. Preflight
Detects the operating system, CPU architecture, shell, and required download or extraction tools.
2. Resolve
Reads the official Marshell release manifest and selects the latest compatible application package.
3. Install
Downloads Marshell, verifies its SHA-256 checksum, and unpacks it into a user-writable application or command directory.
4. Integrate
Registers the marshell command and adds a desktop or Start Menu entry where the platform supports it.
Existing configuration is preserved. On Linux and macOS the default configuration lives at ~/.config/marshell. Windows installs command files under the current user's local application data directory.
Note
First launch
Open a fresh terminal after installation so PATH changes are available, then launch Marshell:
# Start Marshell from a terminal
marshell
# If the command is not found, open a new terminal first▋- Create or open a workspace for a project.
- Select the project directory that its terminals should use.
- Open a terminal pane and run the project's normal commands.
- Split or resize panes to build a project-specific layout.
Warning
Available in v1
Project workspaces
Keep projects separated in the workspace sidebar. Switching projects re-scopes the active workspace instead of mixing unrelated work.
Native terminal workspace
Run project commands inside Marshell with real terminal panes instead of juggling separate terminal windows.
Flexible terminal layouts
Split, resize, and organize terminal panes into a layout that matches the project you are working on.
Cross-platform desktop builds
Marshell v1.0.0 ships release artifacts for Windows, macOS, and Linux through GitHub Releases.
Product status
Marshell is moving quickly. This table follows the application repository's current roadmap and avoids treating prototypes or planned concepts as production features.
| Status | Capability | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Shipped | Project workspace sidebar | Isolated project spaces, workspace-scoped state, and fast project switching. |
| Shipped | Multi-pane terminal grid | Split, resize, arrange, and clear real terminal panes attached to the active project. |
| Shipped | Cross-platform desktop artifacts | Signed desktop builds for Windows and macOS, alongside Linux AppImage, DEB, and RPM packages. |
| In Progress | Agent lifecycle & terminal spawning | Spawn background agents directly into project terminal panes with live output streams, stop, and restart controls. |
| In Progress | Task board with agent dispatch | Drag-and-drop task cards to assign work items directly to active agents. |
| Planned | Prompt Forge | Version, edit, and test reusable prompt templates across projects. |
| Planned | Dependency-aware swarm execution | Run multi-agent pipelines with explicit task dependencies, shared context, and trace visualization. |
| Planned | Plugin system | Extend Marshell with custom agent and workflow integrations. |
Build from source
Building from source is intended for contributors and people who want to test the latest main branch. It requires Node.js 20 or newer, pnpm 10 or newer, Rust, and the Tauri prerequisites for your operating system.
git clone https://github.com/Hyperion-Workspace/Hyperion.git
cd Hyperion
pnpm install
pnpm tauri dev▋The application is a flat Next.js and Tauri project. Usepnpm check, pnpm typecheck, andpnpm build before contributing a change.
Troubleshooting
The marshell command is not found
Open a new terminal. On Linux or macOS, also confirm that ~/.local/bin is included in PATH.
The Unix installer cannot download or extract the release
Ensure curl or wget andtar are installed. Git Bash, MSYS, and Cygwin also need unzip for Windows release archives.
PowerShell blocks the installer
Use the documented command exactly. The Windows launcher uses a process-scoped execution-policy bypass and requires PowerShell 5.1 or newer.
I need a package-specific installer
Download the EXE, MSI, DMG, AppImage, DEB, or RPM from the official download page.
FAQ
Not when using a prebuilt release or the one-line installer. Node.js 20+, pnpm 10+, and Rust are only required when building Marshell from source.
Not yet. The workspace and terminal grid are shipped. Agent lifecycle and task-board dispatch are in progress, while dependency-aware swarm orchestration is planned. This page separates available features from roadmap items deliberately.
Official binaries are published on dl.marshell.bond. The Marshell download page selects the appropriate asset for your platform.
Set NO_COLOR to disable colors. CI and redirected output also use plain logs. Installation shows four stages and actual download progress.
Yes. Marshell is available under the MIT License, and its desktop application source is published on GitHub.
